WINE THERAPY

¿What is wine therapy?

It consists of a series of treatments for which different types of grape, grape juice (before fermenting), wines or oils derived from grape, are used. These beauty treatments have the ability, among others, of reducing abdomen, making gluteus firm, making muscles and skin younger and invigorating breasts. They are also good for relaxation, through massage with fresh grape pulp and essential oils, or with Sauvignon or Merlot wines. Moreover, according to people who know, a cream with grape extract, or with grape seed oil, reduces wrinkles. While others say for circulation there is nothing better than a hydro massage with grape extract and biological salts. Wine therapy was born in Graves region, in the Bordeaux hills (where some of the oldest cellars, vineyards and castles of Europe are located). This new treatment was extended all around the world, and there is a possibility of having wine baths not only in France but also in Italy, Argentina, Brazil, and other countries.Wine therapy is mainly based on grape properties, each of the grape components offers different advantages, and acting together, they provide a healthier look to the skin. GRAPE (FRUIT) EXTRACT:

Grape composition is very complex and varied according to the procedence, variety and type of grape. It consists of variable amounts of glucose, laevulose, sacarose. It also has tannic acid, tartaric acid, Gallic acid in the form of calcic salts.Since the beginning of the last century in many studies, the chemical composition of the different parts of the grape was studied. Fruit acids, tannin acids and pigments are the main substances responsible for taste, smell and color of wine. From the pharmacological point of view, polyphenols and flavonoids are the most important group. Some polyphenols present are: Quercetin, Catequine, Leucoantocianidine, Antocianidine and trans- Resveratrol. COSMETIC PROPERTIES The Vitis Vinifera fruit is used in cosmetics and added to the formula as active ingredient in those products destined to fight factors causing premature skin aging. This is possible thanks to the action that captures free radicals and the antioxidant action provided by abundance of polyphenols.

GRAPE SEED OIL

Grape seeds have from 15% to 20% of oil similar in its composition to sesame oil and are used in foods. This oil has from 0.5% to 1% of insaponifiable (phytosterols) and triglycerides (palmitic acid, estearic acid, oil acid and linoleic acid). The grape seed oil is obtained through cold expression of Vitis vinifera seed. COSMETIC PROPERTIES The essential fatty acids are composed by two fatty acids: LINOLEIC acid (AL) and LINOLENIC acid (AAL) The body cannot synthesize essential fatty acids so it must obtain them from outside. These acids are necessary to be able to synthesize lipids of the tissues, they play an important role in regulation of cholesterol levels, they are promoters of prostaglandin. The application of these acids gives flexibility and a younger look.

RED GRAPEVINE EXTRACT

The red grapevine extract is obtained from Vitis Vinifera leaves.There, we can find:- Polyphenols- Organic acids: tartaric, malic, oxalic, fumaric, citric acid…. - Phenolic acids: hydroxibenzoic acid, p-fumaric acid - Other active ingredients: esters of cynamic acid and of tartaric acid, vitamin B, C and folic acid, carotenoids, proteins and mineral salts.

TRADITIONAL USES

Grapevine leaves due to their astringent and haemostatic properties are used in varicose veins cases. Drinks made of red grapevine leaves are used a lot in the East in the form of feet bath to treat symptoms of varicose veins, alternating the temperature of baths. (hot and cold baths).

COSMETIC PROPERTIES

· Activity on circulation.Red grapevine extract is used to formulate cosmetic products with circulation stimulating activity. Antocianosides, like other flavonoids, have P vitamin action, decreasing capillary fragility and increasing its strength, so they are beneficial for the capillary and vein vascular system.Also antocianosides have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and feature low toxicity. · Astringent activityThe dry mouth sensation occurs because tannins are capable of interacting with saliva proteins promoting or forming additives. The astringent flavor of tea and wine, for example, is due to its tannin content. Therapeutic use of tannins is derived from its affinity for protein molecules. By topic use they impermeabilize the outer layers of skin and mucosa, protecting this way the underlying layers, and they have also vasoconstrictor effect on the small surface vessels. Limiting the loss of fluids and hindering outside aggression, tannins promote regeneration of tissues in case of surface injuries.This activity of tannins makes the red grapevine extract have a very useful application in the cosmetic field as regulator of sebaceous secretion and as purifier.

· Antioxidant activity.Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants protecting LDL from oxidative damage by several ways: - As antioxidants, capturing free radicals and reducing their generation.- For their capacity to inhibit, activate or protect specific enzymes in the body. Below we propose two treatments, one to be performed in the cabinet and the other at home:

TREATMENT IN CABINET
The first stage consists in performing a body exfoliation with our body exfoliator eliminating dead cells and impurety, which naturally activates the cellular regeneration. The grape seeds eliminate dead cells and the cream moisturizes and humidifies. We massage the body with hands particularly on dry areas such as elbows and knees and then we remove the product with warm water.In the second stage, we use massage oil made of grape seed oil that, being hydrating and anti-inflammatory, increases blood circulation and skin temperature, improving physiological condition. The grape seed oil for its properties moisturizes mature and not nourished skins, bringing softness and smoothness. Its essential fatty acids give flexibility to the skin, helping stop the aging and degeneration of tissues. We will perform a deep and long massage upwards to the heart from feet to knees and from knees to thigh, abdomen, chest, neck and arms.Finally we will cover the client’s body with a hot towel and after five minutes we will help her to bend over and to sit down on the stretcher.The complete process lasts about an hour. HOME MAINTENANCE TREATMENT

Goal: Keep the anti-aging action.Morning: in the daily shower, we will use the bath gel with grape extract to enjoy at home the antioxidant effects of grape extract. After the shower, dry the body and apply the hydrating lotion with grape seed oil and grapevine extract. We will apply the cream with a soft upward massage, from feet to arms, until total absorption of the product.At night: to relax and avoid stress, nothing better than a bath with bath salt with grapevine extract. Besides enjoying a relaxing moment, it allows us to continue with our anti-aging treatment.We will prepare the bath tub with the amount of water desired, controlling the correct temperature (36ºC) and will put the amount of grapevine extract salt as necessary (100g). Now we have everything ready to relax for a few minutes (it is advisable to stay in the bath tub for 15 to 20 minutes) At that moment it is recommended to drink a glass of red wine, if you wish, because according to studies made, it helps to a better function of the heart-circulation system.
